Dr Scott Tyo is currently Chief Platforms Division in the Defence Science and Technology Group. In this role, Scott leads over 400 scientists and engineers who, together with the broader innovation, science and technology community, develop, integrate and experiment with innovative technologies to produce solutions for both crewed and uncrewed military platforms across the air, land, maritime and space domains. Prior to joining Defence, Scott had a 25-year career in academia as a researcher, instructor and later a senior academic leader. He was the Head of the School of Engineering for UNSW at the Australian Defence Force Academy (Canberra) from 2015 – 2021 and the Head of the Electrical and Computer Systems Engineering Department at Monash University (Melbourne) from 2022 – 2024. His BSE, MSE, and PhD degrees are all in electrical engineering from the University of Pennsylvania (USA), and he served for seven years as an officer in the US Air Force working in the US Department of Defense (DoD) research enterprise. Dr Tyo’s research interests are in applied electromagnetics and optics, with a special interest in applying technology to solve problems in defence and security. His research has been funded by several US DoD agencies, DSTG and NASA, among other sponsors. Scott is a Fellow of the IEEE, SPIE, and Optica and Engineers Australia, and he was been a member of the Board of Directors of SPIE and the Administrative Committee of the IEEE Antennas and Propagation Society. He was the recipient of the 2014 SPIE GG Stokes Award for his work in optical polarisation measurement.
